Guangdong Pharmaceutical University is one of the three pharmaceutical universities in China and the earliest institution in South China to offer pharmaceutical programs. Established in 1958 as the Guangdong Health Cadre Training College, it was upgraded to a regular undergraduate university in 1978 and renamed Guangdong Medical College. In 1994, it became Guangdong Pharmaceutical College, and in 2003, it obtained the authority to grant master's degrees. In 2016, it was officially renamed Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, and in 2022, it was authorized to award doctoral degrees. The university has three major campuses in Guangzhou (Guangzhou University Town, Baogang, and Chigang), Zhongshan, and Yunfu, covering an area of nearly 5,300 acres. It comprises 19 schools, 2 research institutes, and 2 affiliated tertiary hospitals. Over the course of more than 60 years of development, the university has become a distinctive institution in the field of pharmaceutical and medical education, characterized by a focus on pharmaceuticals, the integration of medicine and pharmacy, the fusion of pharmaceuticals and engineering, and coordinated interdisciplinary development. It has been listed as a "provincial and municipal co-constructed undergraduate university" and a "high-level university for striving for excellence, addressing weaknesses, and highlighting specialties" in Guangdong Province.
The university places great emphasis on moral education and talent cultivation. It continuously strengthens the comprehensive leadership and construction of the Communist Party of China (CPC), establishing and improving various systems such as theoretical education, ideological education, news and publicity, and ideological and political work. It integrates the concept of "holistic education" into the "five advances" work system. Through initiatives such as the “college system” (an educational management system integrating general and specialized education to achieve balanced educational goals for students) and lectures by renowned scholars and medical experts, it strives to create an ideological and political education brand guided by the CPC. This brand is curriculum-oriented, culturally immersive, pioneering, exemplary, and practical, aiming to provide challenging experiences. The university is dedicated to nurturing highly qualified professionals in the pharmaceutical, medical, and related fields who are committed to preserving health, caring for life, possess solid professional foundations, and demonstrate practical abilities and innovative spirit. It has achieved notable recognition, with 4 secondary CPC committees being awarded titles such as "benchmark institutions for CPC construction in the province," "advanced grassroots party organizations in the provincial education system," and "demonstration points for CPC construction in provincial public hospitals." Additionally, 5 party branches have been selected as "model branches for CPC construction in the province," and 1 party branch has been selected as part of the third batch of "national model branches for CPC construction." The university currently offers 49 undergraduate majors, making it one of the most comprehensive institutions in terms of pharmaceutical disciplines in the country. It has 21 national and provincial first-class undergraduate programs, including pharmacy, clinical medicine, pharmaceutical formulation, traditional Chinese medicine, biopharmaceuticals, and clinical pharmacy. It also offers 42 national and provincial first-class undergraduate courses, such as drug analysis, traditional Chinese medicine analysis, and health statistics, as well as 20 provincial demonstration courses for graduate students and 21 provincial joint training bases for graduate students. Furthermore, the university has a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, a national-level joint training base for graduate students, and its clinical medicine college, college of public health, and college of traditional Chinese medicine have been selected as the first batch of high-level clinical medicine colleges, colleges of public health, and colleges of traditional Chinese medicine to be cultivated and constructed in Guangdong Province. In the past two sessions, the university has been awarded 4 first prizes and 5 second prizes in provincial teaching achievements. It currently has approximately 24,000 full-time students.
Discipline development strengthens advantages. We have established seven provincial key disciplines, including the Peak Key Disciplines and Advantageous Key Disciplines in Guangdong Province. The disciplines of Pharmacy and Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine serve as the leading forces in the field of pharmaceuticals and health. Our university holds a doctoral program in Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and first-level master's degree programs in Pharmacy and Preventive Medicine, along with seven professional master's degree programs. In the fourth round of national discipline assessment, Pharmacy ranked joint 21st. Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Agricultural Science have successively entered the top 1% in the ESI global rankings. Overall, our university's ESI subject ranking stands at 223 among national universities. Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine has consistently ranked third in the 2018 and 2019 Soft Science Rankings and fourth in 2021.
Remarkable achievements in talent development have been made. Currently, our institution boasts a faculty of 1,849 members, with 1,522 dedicated full-time teachers. More than 90.5% of our staff hold a master's degree or higher, and over 45% possess a doctoral degree. Furthermore, 47.2% of our team members hold senior professional and technical positions. We take pride in our comprehensive roster of 1,173 graduate supervisors, comprising 415 internal supervisors, 245 external supervisors, and 513 collaborative supervisors. Additionally, we are proud to host 16 high-level research teams recognized at the provincial level.
Continuously enhancing our innovation capabilities. we proactively align ourselves with the major development strategies of both the country and Guangdong Province. Our institution has successfully established 54 national and provincial-level scientific research platforms, including the esteemed "National Industry-University-Research Incubation Base for the Health Industry," the groundbreaking "Guangdong Pharmaceutical University - The University of Hong Kong Sun Yat-sen Biomedical Innovation Platform," and the influential Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Lipid and Glycemic Metabolic Diseases. These platforms collectively form a comprehensive research and development innovation system, encompassing chemical medicine, biological medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and integrated pharmaceuticals. We proudly spearhead two key special projects of the National Key Research and Development Program, two key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, one excellent young scientist project of the National Natural Science Foundation, and one major project of basic and applied basic research in Guangdong Province, among other noteworthy national and local initiatives.
Our research prowess in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, particularly through the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, is widely recognized. We have developed a highly regarded multidisciplinary integrated model for the prevention and control of metabolic diseases, while also formulating the first international standard for the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic diseases using traditional Chinese and Western medicine. This groundbreaking standard was officially announced at the 5th World Congress of Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Integration. Additionally, we have successfully created a series of innovative Chinese medicines, including the revolutionary FTZ, all of which possess independent intellectual property rights. Notably, our contributions have resulted in a total of 538 patents granted by the country, PCT, Europe, and the United States. Furthermore, our pioneering efforts have led to the successful application for clinical trial approval of the innovative class 1.1 Chinese medicine "Brain Vessel Clear Granules" for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Additionally, we have played a vital role in formulating national pharmacopoeia standards for Citrus reticulata pericarpium et endocarpium and stir-fried Evodia rutaecarpa, both of which have been included in the esteemed 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
In recent years, our dedication to scientific and technological excellence has garnered 34 esteemed awards at the provincial and ministerial levels. Notable accolades include the National Science and Technology Progress Award (second class), National Innovation Award, He Liang He Li Foundation Award, Wu Jieping Medical Foundation Award, and National Patent Award.
Our commitment to social engagement is a prominent aspect of our services. We have successfully established a national-level technology enterprise incubator, which has attracted a cumulative total of 320 companies with a registered capital exceeding 3.7 billion yuan. Through our efforts, we have nurtured 20 high-tech enterprises and 9 innovative and entrepreneurial companies. Our notable achievements include obtaining 20 national, provincial, and municipal qualifications, such as being recognized as a "Postdoctoral Research Workstation" and a "Demonstration Base for Entrepreneurship Incubation" in Guangdong Province. In 2020, we were selected as a pilot cultivation unit for industry-academia integration in Guangdong Province.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong, we have established a sub-center for a national key laboratory. Additionally, we have taken the initiative to establish the first joint venture research and development institution in Guangdong Province, leveraging the strengths of institutions from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. Demonstrating our leadership in fostering collaboration, we have spearheaded the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pharmaceutical Industry Collaborative Innovation Alliance. As part of this endeavor, we have organized the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pharmaceutical Industry Innovation and Development Summit, driving innovation within the pharmaceutical industry in the dynamic Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Through our active participation in research and development, we have made significant contributions to the development of 51 newly listed drugs, thus supporting the listing of three companies, including Global Pharmaceuticals.
Our affiliated First Hospital has established the "Guangzhou Pharmaceutical - Liannan" Medical Consortium model, which has been highly recognized by the State Council's medical reform expert group and promoted throughout Guangdong Province. In response to the outbreak in Hubei, our two affiliated hospitals have sent four batches of medical personnel to support the fight against the epidemic. The joint medical team from the First Hospital involved in aiding Wuhan received the title of "Advanced Collective in the National Health System for Epidemic Prevention and Control." Additionally, six alumni were recognized as national advanced individuals in the fight against the epidemic and as outstanding members of the Communist Party of China.
We believe in open collaboration to shape our brand. We have established cooperative and exchange relationships with more than 50 universities and research institutions in over 20 countries and regions across five continents. Our university attracts students from more than 20 countries, including Russia, India, and South Africa. We have taken the lead in establishing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pharmaceutical Industry Collaborative Innovation Alliance and the China Integrated Pharmacy Alliance. Moreover, we have consistently conducted high-quality international academic exchange activities, including hosting 29 high-level international academic conferences such as the 5th World Congress of Integrative Medicine, the 2019 Council Meeting of the China-Russia Medical University Alliance, and the China-Russia International Conference on Medical Science, Technology, Innovation, and Cooperation. Notably, we have organized eight academic events focusing on China-Russia cooperation in COVID-19 prevention and control. The outcomes of these events have been included in the regular work reports presented to the Chinese side during meetings between the Chinese and Russian Prime Ministers. They have also been featured in the headline of the 5th issue of the 2020 Chinese-Russian Science and Technology Innovation Yearbook published by the Ministry of Science and Technology. We have established a brand for academic exchanges on China-Russia cooperation in the fight against the epidemic, making significant contributions to international collaboration in epidemic prevention.
Actively participating in educational cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, we are advancing the "Asian Campus" project and implementing special programs for joint supervision of graduate students by both Chinese and foreign mentors, as well as joint cultivation programs for graduate students in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region.
